17 Things You Need to Know Before Visitng Cardiff.

Things You Need to Know before Visitng Cardiff
We are not English - We may speak the English language here in South Wales, but we are not English. Whenever I travel abroad, and I say I’m from Wales, people always think it’s part of England. It’s not.
Match Days - If you a rugby fan, then Match Days are for you. Cardiff is the host for six nations, Heineken cup & world cup. But if you don’t like big crowds, rowdy people then stay well away from the town centre.

Castles - I love Castles. And I’m super proud to have a beautiful one on my door step.
There is a charge of £12.50 but that gives you access to the grounds, the apartments, the Norman Keep, the wartime tunnels and loads more!

Food & Drink - The one thing I love about Cardiff, is that whatever culture of food you fancy, Cardiff will have it. Cardiff has a great selection of cocktails bars, rum bar, gin bars (FUCK YEAH) and good ol’ pubs. In the summer we have Street Food Festivals that run all summer long and in the winter we have the Christmas Markets with all the delicious winter warmers.
Different areas – As many different cities, Cardiff has different areas which is just as busy and great at the centre. If you like quirky independent cafes and restaurants you should visit Cathays or Pontcanna.
Transport – Central Cardiff has 2 train stations, Central Station & Queen street station. First Great Western & Arriva Trains Wales, trains run very regularly to and from both stations. There are stations in the areas around Cardiff if you did want to venture out. National Express and Megabus also run to and from Cardiff on a regular basis.
Transport around the city – Buses are the main form of transport to get around the city. The buses only accept the correct amount of change or there is an app which allows you to purchase all different kind of tickets and you can pay by card. There is also a Sightseeing bus which you can hop on and off of around the different areas.

Friendly – The Welsh are a friendly bunch of people who love a good drink (and laugh) although we do moan about everything but mainly the weather.
Bute Park - I know I mentioned Cardiff Castle a bit further up, but attached to the castle in Bute Park. Bute Park is beautiful and goes on for miles and miles as it’s attached to other parks such as Sophia Gardens and Llandaff fields.
Cardiff Bay Barrage - As much as I love living in such a vibrant and busy city, I will also be my happiest self when I’m near water. If you fancy a walk then I would definitely recommend Cardiff Bay and the Barrage, even in the winter it’s great.
Museums & City Hall – if you’re after some culture, you should visit the Natural Museum Wales. Its free entry but donations are welcome. Next to the museum is City Hall. It’s a council owned building but you are welcome to walk around.

Coastal – If you didn’t know, Wales is surrounded by ocean on 2 sides, so take a boat ride. It also means there’s a really cool bridge called the Severn Bridge to see, which also take you to Bristol and the South West.
Welsh Language – If you didn’t already know welsh people speak really fast. We don’t even realise we do it. And not many welsh people can actually speak welsh.
Languages – Whenever I go to a new city/country, I’m always a little nervous about not knowing a language. Cardiff is filled with multi-cultural languages spoken from all around the world.
Weather – it’s cold. And wet. But to give Wales some slack, that one week on sun we do have its bloody beautiful.
Things You Need to Know before Visitng Cardiff
Necessities – Always carry an umbrella. Always.
Pit stops – You know that episode of friends, the one where Joey says ‘Stupid Gap, on every corner. Well it’s like that here in Cardiff but instead of Gap, there’s a Starbucks and Greggs on every corner.

  6. We spent about 4 days in Cardiff & really liked it. I think the highlights for us were the Cardiff Castle tour of course but also exploring the history of Roald Dahl & walking around Old Town. We found the people there to be great. They were often buying us beers to try or Welsh Cookies to try. We also had a great Tea at this Tea Room right next to the Castle in the Park. It was crazy good! Also loved checking out the oldest record shop in the UK if not Europe! The only thing I didnt like was that Breakfast with Cockles...tasted kind of funky to me.

  11. I spent a week or so in Wales, years ago, and the friendliness of the people still stands out! The castle was very cool, but the most memorable bit of Cardiff, for me, was the night life on a Friday night - it was wild!
